The Medical Office Assistant plays a key role in medical offices and allied health care facilities.

Their duties may include the utilization of computerized medical office software, administrative office procedures, health insurance processing, billing and transcription of medical reports.

About the Medical Office Assistant (MOA) program  (available at both the Dallas and Richardson campuses)

The Medical Office Assistant program develops the necessary skills to function as entry-level medical front office assistant, medical receptionist, Medical office secretary, medical billing and collections, appointment scheduler or a medical records clerk in a variety of healthcare settings.  Work places includ physicians offices, medical centers, clinics, hospitals, nursing homes ambulatory care centers, and medical billing offices.  The specific duties of the medical office assistant will often vary from office to office due to office size, location, and specialty.

Medical office assistants perform duties such as:

Administrative Job Duties

Greeting and directing patients
Answering telephones
Updating and maintaining electronic medical records
Obtaining insurance verification and authorization
Adjust scheduling for emergency cases
Scheduling Patient’s Doctors Appointments
Processing insurance claim forms
Arranging for hospital admission and laboratory services
Patient and insurance billing
Medical insurance coding and collections
Accounts receivable and accounts payable
Compose and type routine office correspondence
Bookkeeping
Operate computer, fax, and copy machines
Laboratory Services
Maintaining OSHA guidelines
Other duties that may be required for efficient health care delivery and reimbursement

Clinical Duties a Medical Office Assistants may Perform include:

Taking patient medical histories
Vital signs
Preparing patients for examinations
Assisting physicians during examinations

Medical Coder - (one that uses a set of medical diagnosis and procedure codes to bill patients or gather data for research)


Insurance Claims Analyst - (one that works for or audits insurance claims from medical practices and hospitals)


Coding Specialist - ( someone that has taken coding billing course and been certified by: American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA)CCS as an - Certified Coding Specialist  CCS-P - Certified Coding Specialist Physician CHPS - Certified Health Privacy Specialist CCA - Certified Coding Associate

Coding Technician (another name for an coding specialist)
