The Dental Assistant Program prepares a graduate to work as an entry-level Dental Assistant, Dental Receptionist, Office Manager or Dental Hygienist Assistant in a dental office, specialty practice, or dental clinic. Graduates will be able to assist the dentist in a variety of dental procedures, take dental x-rays, perform various laboratory duties and perform administrative tasks using dental software. This program is taught with a combination of lecture, practical exercises in the dental operatory and dental lab and with real-world experience during the externship portion of training conducted off-campus at dental facilities.

The Dental Assistant program also includes preparation for the Dental Assistant Examination to become a Registered Dental Assistant in the State of Texas.
Employment of dental assistants is expected to grow by 31 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations. Ongoing research linking oral health and general health will continue to increase the demand for preventive dental services. As dental practices grow,more dental assistants will be needed.
