Who are Medical Assistants and what do they do?

 


Our school teaches medical assisting as a professional career with an emphasizing on the wide range of hospital and doctor's office skills.  Your curriculum at PCI's medical assistant school includes preparations that will facilitate you in assisting physicians in examining and treating patients.

Many people become interested in the medical-field by being exposed to it as a child by having a illness like asthma, diabetes, sickle cell... and grow up wanting to have the knowledge to be able to help a kid knowing what they are going thru.


Others are drawn to the allied health fields because of watching a loved one be sick and wanting to help and feeling helpless.  Knowledge is power you may never know how many people's lives you will change during your medical career.



The medical assistant course will cover common medical conditions, human diseases, disease process and diagnostic tests and treatments indicated, and patient instructions.  Basic principles of pharmacology and drug therapy as it relates to the Medical Assisting Profession. 

The medical assistant classes will teach legal and ethical principles and medical laws and ethics associated with today’s changing health care system including cultural and age appropriate interaction with an emphasis on medical assisting . 

Some subjects that you will be taught in our medical assistant institute program will include OSHA ( Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards and regulations such as universal precautions, medical asepsis, infection control, and laboratory safety. 

Lab procedures including collection, proper handling of blood and other body fluids basic hematology procedures, routine urinalysis, rapid strep, pregnancy tests, and venipuncture

You will in class go over Anatomy and Physiology and Pathology and review of the body systems including Ophthalmology, Neurology , Otolaryngology, Gastroenterology, Urology, Obstetrics, Gynecology, Pediatrics, and Geriatrics.. 

Clinical skills such as charting and documentation, patient vital signs, and physical examinations. 

You will learn theory and practice of the ECG ( electrocardiogram )  , EKG training  and acquire skills necessary to perform an EKG and other diagnostic procedures. Graduates will be eligible to take the ekg certification thru ncctinc.com .

You will be taught in class how to recognize and assess cardiopulmonary emergencies and provide appropriate first aid care, and administer CPR. ( with your training, experience and abilities, you could be the difference between a patient living or a family grieving )

After completing the medical assistant course and your externship / internship you will be eligible to become certified thru NCCT National Center for Competency Testing ncctinc.com this can open more doors for you and earn you the respect that you deserve as a professionally trained medical assistant.

What is a medical assistant and what do they do?

What is a Medical Assistant, MA's are multi-skilled allied health practitioners with a scope of practice that assumes a wide range of roles in physicians' offices and other health care settings.

There is a great demand for Medical Assistants.  Medical Assisting is a versatile career for both men and women. 

Medical assisting is one of the most adaptable of the allied healthcare professions because of being trained in clinical and administrative tasks.  The MA is qualified to work in most medical offices and are not limited to a particular medical specialty, so there are many options for employment.

Medical Assistants are viewed by physicians as vital partners in increasing their medical office productivity.  In small practices, Medical Assistants are usually "generalists" the doctors assistant - handling both administrative and clinical duties and reporting directly to an office manager, Physician, Physician Assistant  or other health practitioner.

Medical Assistants in large practices tend to specialize in a particular area under the supervision of department administrators. 

Skills and abilities that a Medical Assistant needs to have to succeed:

  • Verbal Skills: The ability to effectively communicate verbally to convey information and problem solving (being empathetic and listing, validating the patients concerns - relaying information in a appropriate manor can improve even the most dreadful news of a patents prognosis)

  • Reasoning Skills:  To be able to use information in problem solving (resolving conflicts, prioritize needs, adapt schedules, reassign duties, modify activities, revise procedures)
     

  • Quantitative Skills:  Using math in finding solutions to problems (applying basic math to medically related problems such as Patient weight, cost of supplies and Inventory,  interpret diagrams, temperature, charts, graphs, and tables and conversions

  • Perceptual Skills:  Ability to use visual information (give support through positive body language exhibiting active listening skills while being aware of nonverbal communications)

  • Attentiveness:  Paying attention (Observe and identify needs of others :patients, family members, team members, business contacts)

Professionalism

Practice within your scope of practice don't give advice to a patient (that's what the doctor is for)
Maintain confidentiality (don't gossip about patients or coworkers )

Communication skills

Observe and listen to your patients their families and your coworkers
Be empathetic and impartial
Communicate with patents that have special needs appropriately
Be a positive liaison between the physician and patient ( communicate any concerns of the patient to the DR)
Be able to communicate information verbally, by mail, Fax, phone, email, and use appropriate confidentiality releases when transmitting ( see hipaa Standards for Privacy of Individually Identifiable Health Information )
Use medical terminology appropriately ( don't use slang or layman words when relaying information )
Use correct grammar and spelling in written communications

Administrative Duties

Record management (knowledge of filing systems, storage, retention protection and destruction of health records)
Maintenance and use of medical office equipment (copier dictation / transcription equipment, telephone, computer equipment, typewriter,  postage meter, FAX and other Imaging equipment)
Schedule appointments (using appointment book and patient health care system database scheduling  programs practice management system ie. Medisoft, SuiteMed , Dentrix, MediTouch, ADP AdvancedMD, Allscripts EHR, Waiting Room Solutions ...
Organize and maintain the physicians calendar of meetings and arrangements

Clinical duties

Vital signs (perform and record oral, axillary, rectal, temperature  - perform and record radial, apical pulse and respiration rate, take and record blood pressure )
Emergencies:
Triage - phone, visual (recognize a emergency and non emergency situation)
CPR and first-aid:
CPR- administer CPR according to current care giver CPR procedures
First-aid – administer first-aid for controlling bleeding apply bandages treat shock immobilize fractures treat syncope, central nervous system injuries and disorders, seizures, poisoning, burns, diabetic crisis and other emergencies
Maintain the patient treatment areas
Interview patients and record their histories and complaints
Give instruction to patients on procedures and exams
Maintain radiation safety for self and patient for unnecessary exposure
Assist with procedures and treatments assist physician chart the procedure
Collect and process specimens ( blood, urine, stool, throat culture, vaginal )
Perform and record results of routine urinalysis, hematologic and blood chemistry tests
Other test for immunologic testing strep, Rh factor, pregnancy, mono, allergy
Perform 12 lead EKG electrocardiogram / rhythm strip
Contact patents with lab results / instructions...
Schedule a patent for other treatments or hospitalization

Office management

Maintain the office keep a appealing office environment
Keep office and medical equipment in working order and schedule service and maintenance when needed ( such as examination tables, scales, sphygmomanometer, thermometer, ophthalmoscope, otoscope, autoclave electrocardiograph,  pulmonary function, cast equipment, oxygen equipment, wheelchairs )
Inventory and supplies
Knowledge of bookkeeping systems
CPT and ICD 9 CM coding
Insurance reimbursement guidelines
Accounts receivables / payable

Administrative Roles / Medical Assistant duties

  • Scheduling and receiving patients

  • Serving as a liaison between the physician (including telephone screening) and other individuals

  • Answering telephones

  • Greeting patients

  • Managing the practice finances

  • Preparing and maintaining medical records

  • Update and file patient medical records

  • Filling out insurance forms

  • Handling correspondence from other doctors or therapies

  • Scheduling appointments

  • Arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services

  • Handling billing and bookkeeping

Clinical Roles  / Clinical Medical Assistant duties and requirements

  • Take medical histories and record vital signs

  • Asepsis and infection control

  • Explain treatment procedures to patients

  • Prepare patients for examination and procedures

  • Assist the physician during the examination

  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens

  • Dispose of contaminated supplies and sterilize medical instruments

  • Instruct patients about medication and special diets

  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician

  • Authorize drug refills as directed and telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy

  • Draw blood phlebotomy

  • Prepare patients for x-rays and take electrocardiograms

  • Remove sutures and change dressings

  • Arrange examining room instruments and equipment

  • Purchase and maintain supplies and equipment

  • Keep waiting and examining rooms neat and clean

  •  Ability to read SOAP notes - acronym for: Subjective, Objective ,Assessment, and Plan a method of documentation used by health care providers - ( soap note example: S: No Chest Pain or SOB... O: A-febrile, No  distress noted... A: Patient is a 56 year old man on post-op day 1 for...  P: Recovering well...monitor diet. monitor labs. Prepare pt for discharge him tomorrow...)

What is the projected job market and outlook for Medical Assistants

 
Job seekers who want to work as a medical assistant should find excellent job prospects.  MA's are projected to account for a very large number of new jobs, and many other opportunities will come from the need to replace workers leaving the occupation and the aging population.  Those with formal training or experience — particularly those with medical assistant certification should have good opportunities.

Most Medical Assistants worked in Physician’s / Doctors offices; others work in public and private hospitals, including inpatient and outpatient health care facilities, and others work in offices of other health practitioners, such as Chiropractors, Optometrists, and Podiatrists.  Most of the remainder worked in other health care industries such as outpatient care centers and nursing and residential care facilities.
