Who are Medical Assistants and what do they do?

Medical Assistants are multiskilled allied health practitioners who assume a wide range of roles in physicians' offices and other health care settings. There is a great demand for medical assistants.

Medical Assistants are viewed by physicians as vital partners in increasing the medical office productivity.  In small practices, Medical Assistants are usually "generalists" the doctors assistant handling both administrative and clinical duties and reporting directly to an office manager, physician or other health practitioner.

Those in large practices tend to specialize in a particular area under the supervision of department administrators.  The following are typical duties that Medical Assistants perform (clinical duties may vary according to state law.)

The Medical Assistant needs strong organizational skills and project a positive attitude to the health providers patients.

Administrative Roles for Medical Assistants

  • Scheduling and receiving patients

  • Serving as a liaison between the physician (including telephone screening) and other individuals

  • Answer telephones

  • Greet patients

  • Managing practice finances

  • Preparing and maintaining medical records

  • Update and file patient medical records

  • Fill out insurance forms

  • Handle correspondence

  • Schedule appointments

  • Arrange for hospital admission and laboratory services

  • Handle billing and bookkeeping

Clinical Roles for Medical Assistants

  • Take medical histories and record vital signs

  • Asepsis and infection control

  • Explain treatment procedures to patients

  • Prepare patients for examination and procedures

  • Assist the physician during the examination

  • Collect and prepare laboratory specimens

  • Dispose of contaminated supplies and sterilize medical instruments

  • Instruct patients about medication and special diets

  • Prepare and administer medications as directed by a physician

  • Authorize drug refills as directed and telephone prescriptions to a pharmacy

  • Draw blood

  • Prepare patients for x-rays and take electrocardiograms

  • Remove sutures and change dressings

  • Arrange examining room instruments and equipment

  • Purchase and maintain supplies and equipment

  • Keep waiting and examining rooms neat and clean


What is the projected job market and outlook for medical assistants?

Employment is projected to increase 21% or more, faster than average, ranking medical assistants among the fastest growing occupations over the next decade.  Job opportunities should be excellent, particularly for those with formal training or certification and experience.***

Job seekers who want to work as a medical assistant should find excellent job prospects.  Medical assistants are projected to account for a very large number of new jobs, and many other opportunities will come from the need to replace workers leaving the occupation.  Those with formal training or experience — particularly those with certification — should have the best job opportunities.***

Medical assistants held about 417,000 jobs in 2006.  Approximately 62 percent worked in physician’s offices; 12% worked in public and private hospitals, including inpatient and outpatient facilities, and 11% worked in offices of other health practitioners, such as chiropractors, optometrists, and podiatrists.  Most of the remainder worked in other health care industries such as outpatient care centers and nursing and residential care facilities.***

 

With the major advances in medical science and the increasing complexity in delivering healthcare services, employers are increasingly seeking qualified applicants with formal training.  The Medical Assistant Program at PCI can equip you with the necessary training to begin your career in the medical field.

The earnings of medical assistants vary, depending on their experience, skill level, and location.  Median annual earnings of wage-and-salary medical assistants were $26,290 in May 2006.  The middle 50 percent earned between $21,970 and $31,210.  The lowest 10 percent earned less than $18,860, and the highest 10 percent earned more than $36,840.  Median annual earnings in the industries employing the largest numbers of medical assistants in May 2006 were:

General medical and surgical hospitals $27,340
Outpatient care centers 26,840
Offices of physicians 26,620
Offices of chiropractors 22,940
Offices of optometrists 22,850***
